I had everything in the bag: half a dozen recommendations from my current company’s executives and other current faculty of the job I was applying to (middle school building tech), the guy who previously held the job recommended me to his boss, the tech director for the district called me after the first interview with him to give me tips about this one, certified well over what they needed, lived ONE block away, have experience with kids and customer service at my old job (pool manager at the park district).

And I was a nervous fumbling wreck. I hate everything.

I hope they call back.

Edit, also the cars are in shambles

With all those recommendations you’re probably fine (especially with the internal one). Good luck though!

I had an interview last week....haven’t heard from them yet, so I have a feeling it didn’t go well.

“People who knew the candidate for years praised him, but he was nervous for 20 minutes, so we better not hire him.”

I’ve had several interviews where I thought that happened, but I still got a job offer. Hope that happens for you, too!

What jminer said, too - -that stuff is very important. Plus, you probably didn’t come across as nervous as you think.

Hah! No worries, you got the job. If you didn’t then you lost nothing because they are fools for thinking they can judge a person in an interview better than the qualifications, work history and recommendations from people who know your good work.

Bugger.

Still, if it’s any consolation any interview I’ve come away from thinking ‘well I nailed that’ I’ve not got, and all the jobs I’ve had I thought I fucked up royally in the interview (or, at least, not impressed).

If it were up to me, I’d only hire people who were nervous around me in interviews. I devote months to achieving that sort of reaction from my coworkers and it’d be a huge time saver.

I’ve sadly seen it a number of times. Sitting in an interview panel with someone and you can think of 5 better answers, from their own experience, to the questions. Screaming and rooting for them in your head.

Any idea of what you did wrong and what you would do differently?

It’s panicking about to say the RIGHT things and have them IMMEDIATELY.

I only spent a day and a half practicing answering questions like “What are my three greatest strengths”, “What does customer service mean to you”, “Bring your résumé to life”, etc. The more general the question, the more torturous to answer. I just needed to practice more, but I’m like this with many people, especially ones in positions of authority (there were five people: the principal, two vice principals, and two technology teachers).

Thank you! I hope I get it. I really want to do nonprofit rather than for-profit tech

I just got along so much better with the first interview panel (who strictly work with tech for the whole district), that I’ll really feel awful if I wasted their time

I know I was terrible, full 10 seconds of silence at one point to compose myself to keep from throwing up.

How’d the shed turn out, by the way?

Yeah, that is a difficult one. I’m sure you came across better to the panel than you did in your own head. We are our own worst judges.

Also, sorry if you took offense to my other comment. It wasn’t directed at your situation, but it probably wasn’t the most helpful. I’ve interviewed hundreds of people at this point. I cheer on every one and it doesn’t sent always go as planned.

Having been on both sides of the interview table, there’s a good chance the interviewer was thinking “ooh, he’s thoughtful. That’s good”

In my past, I’ve always felt worst after interviews for jobs I really wanted (this is true of dating for me too :/). Partly because I beat myself up too much, partly because I get too nervous when excited. Maybe work on relaxing more for next time, if need be?

I didn’t take offense at all, it’s just a disheartening situation when everyone has positive intentions, but it can’t be communicated because no matter how open everyone is, it’s still a negotiation and all the competitiveness that goes with that.

Yeah good plan. If you get it then it’ll be a nice surprise. If not then you’re ready to move on anyway.

Shed? Must be early in the morning cos i can’t remember! Which one was that?

Huh, I suppose I haven’t updated since then...

It’s all cladded, sprayed with bitumen paint and filled chock full of Spitfires and misc parts (I think about 8 gearboxes of various cars, an engine crane, boxes and boxes of misc small bits, half the panels of the 228, and most of the suspension of a 106).

I’ve even planted a fig tree along one of the walls. Still doesn’t have doors though, because apparently I’m allergic to finishing things...
